PARENTS OF KEMPER ACADEMY

As the Board of Directors of Kemper Academy, we recognize a responsibility to insure each child as safe an educational environment as possible. In order to do so, we know that we must discourage the use of drugs by our students both on and off campus. We have endeavored to implement a drug testing policy that will neither embarrass nor punish the child, but instead will discourage the use of drugs and allow you as a parent the opportunity to intervene as early as possible. Please read the following policy and sign where required. KA STUDENT DRUG TESTING POLICY

1. All test subjects will be randomly selected by a draw, unless there is a reasonable suspicion by school officials that a child may be using drugs, or there is a request from a parent to include his/her child, at the parents expense.

2. A minimum of 5% of student in grades 7-12 will be tested during each random test.

3. Testing will be limited to controlled substances, including, but not limited to (1) Amphetamines; (2) Cocaine; (3) Marijuana; (4) Opiates; (5) Phencyclidine PCP.

4. Test results will be revealed ONLY to the Headmaster and then to the parents of the child.

5. A “positive” test will result in a private meeting between the Headmaster and the parents or legal guardian of the student.

6. A student testing positive will be required to receive counseling from an approved counselor for a period of one month or twenty school days. At the end of that period, the parents will have the child retested. If the second test results in one “positive”, the child will be required to enter a rehabilitation program (approved by Kemper Academy) for not less than thirty days after which time he/she may be re-enrolled in school. Then, thirty days later, he/she would have to be retested at parents’ expense. If the results are “positive”, the child would be removed from Kemper Academy. If the results are “negative”, that would end the testing, unless he/she is randomly picked again for testing.

7. Any student testing “positive” will be dropped from all programs for at least thirty days and will have to be tested “negative” before he/she can be reinstated to his/her former status, and will be barred from any extra-curricular activity of the school.

The school reserves the right to check lockers at any time and to also check any automobile parked on the campus by any means that may be deemed necessary.
